In flashback, Rick and Ilsa fall in love in Paris as the German army approaches, and she fails to meet him at the station.
German long-range guns shelled Paris in 1918, and in June 1940 the Wehrmacht entered an undefended city that stayed occupied for four years. In July 1942 French police rounded up more than 13,000 Jews in the Vel' d'Hiv raid. The Resistance rose on 19 August 1944; General von Choltitz did not carry out Hitler's order to destroy the city, and Leclerc's 2nd Armoured Division liberated it on 25 August.
