Torn from their parents, the children wait behind barbed wire, and Jo decides to try to escape.
This internment camp in the Loiret, south of Paris, was run by French authorities and first held foreign Jewish men arrested in May 1941. After the Vel' d'Hiv roundup of July 1942, thousands of women and children were brought here and to nearby Pithiviers. In early August the parents were deported first; the children, left alone, were sent via Drancy to Auschwitz later that month.
