What really happened

The first series runs from the summer of 1939 to July 1940 and weaves real events into its characters' lives: the German invasion of Poland and the siege of Warsaw, the Nazi killing of disabled people under the T4 programme, the Battle of the River Plate, the Dunkirk evacuation and the Battle of Britain.

The second series covers October 1940 to May 1941, from the Manchester Blitz of December 1940 to Operation Compass and the siege of Tobruk in North Africa, the resistance in occupied France and the Lebensborn programme in Germany. The characters are fictional, and the BBC cancelled the series in February 2024 after two seasons.
