City
Ignoring the plan, Patton races northwest across the island and enters Palermo to cheering crowds.
Sicily's capital was heavily bombed by the Allies in the spring of 1943, leaving much of its old centre in ruins. During Operation Husky, Patton sent his Seventh Army on a rapid drive across western Sicily, and American troops entered Palermo on 22 July 1943 to cheering crowds. The port then became a key Allied supply base for the race to Messina and the campaign in Italy.
