What happened here
Italy's largest southern port was heavily bombed from 1940 onward. After the armistice of September 1943 the German garrison began deporting men and wrecking the harbour, and from 27 to 30 September the people of Naples rose in the Four Days of Naples, forcing the Germans out. Allied troops entered on 1 October 1943 and found a city of ruin, hunger and a thriving black market.
