The hilltop abbey of Monte Cassino anchored Germany's Gustav Line across Italy. Between January and May 1944 the Allies fought four battles to break through, with American, British, New Zealand, Indian and French colonial troops, including Algerian and Moroccan units. The abbey was destroyed by bombing on 15 February 1944. Polish II Corps finally raised its flag over the ruins on 18 May, opening the road to Rome.
