Where it happened

Follow the story across 4 places.

  1. Base

    Stop 1: Pianosa, Tuscan Archipelago

    Key location

Yossarian poisons the soup and moves the bomb line on the map to dodge a raid on Bologna, while the mission count keeps climbing.

  2. City

    Stop 2: Palermo, Sicily

Yossarian tags along on Milo's business trip to Sicily, where the mess officer has somehow been elected mayor.

  3. City

    Stop 3: Valletta, Malta

The trip continues to a fancy dinner in Malta held in Milo's honour.

  4. City

    Stop 4: Rome

On leave in Rome, Yossarian tries to deliver sad news to a girl's family and runs into the ugliest side of his own comrades.

What really happened

Heller drew on his 60 missions in 1944 as a B-25 bombardier with the 340th Bomb Group, which flew from Corsica against bridges, railways and ports in Italy and southern France. Medium bombers of the Twelfth Air Force spent 1944 cutting German supply lines in Italy, and crews watched the number of missions needed to go home rise more than once.

The series moves between the fictional base on Pianosa, the black-market empire Milo builds across the Mediterranean, and leave in Rome. The Bologna mission Yossarian dreads echoes the real Allied raids on the city's rail yards and bridges in 1944.
