City
The war in the Pacific ends with the first use of atomic weapons.
A military headquarters city beside the naval base of Kure, Hiroshima had been largely spared conventional bombing when the B-29 Enola Gay dropped the uranium bomb Little Boy on 6 August 1945. The blast and firestorm killed some 70,000 to 80,000 people at once, and about 140,000 by the end of the year. Radioactive 'black rain' fell on the outskirts; Japan announced its surrender on 15 August.
