What happened here
China's largest city was the scene of one of the first great battles of the Sino-Japanese War, fought from August to November 1937. As the Chinese army withdrew, a few hundred soldiers of the 88th Division held the Sihang Warehouse for four days in full view of the International Settlement. After Pearl Harbor, Japan occupied the foreign concessions in December 1941 and later interned Allied civilians in camps.
