What really happened

Kure, a few kilometres southeast of Hiroshima, was Japan's largest naval arsenal and the port where the battleship Yamato was built. In 1945 American carrier aircraft attacked the remains of the Imperial fleet anchored there, while B-29s bombed the arsenal and burned much of the city in June and July.

On 6 August 1945 the atomic bomb destroyed Hiroshima, killing around 70,000 people immediately and roughly 140,000 by the end of the year; from Kure the mushroom cloud was clearly visible. The film adapts Fumiyo Kōno's manga and was researched in great detail, recreating streets, shops and even the weather of specific days from wartime records and photographs.
