Amsterdam was home to most of the Netherlands' Jews when Germany occupied the country in May 1940. In February 1941 its workers staged a general strike against the first roundups. From July 1942 Anne Frank's family hid in the Secret Annex on the Prinsengracht until their arrest on 4 August 1944. Banker Walraven van Hall secretly financed the resistance. About 75 percent of Dutch Jews were murdered.
