What really happened

Walraven van Hall was an Amsterdam stockbroker who, with his brother Gijs, organized the clandestine financing of the Dutch Resistance. His network supported the families of seamen and striking railway workers, people in hiding and Resistance groups, raising money through secret loans guaranteed by the government in exile in London.

Its boldest operation was a fraud at the Dutch central bank, where forged treasury certificates were swapped for real ones to raise tens of millions of guilders. Van Hall was arrested in January 1945 and executed in Haarlem on 12 February, three months before the liberation. The film compresses the story and invents some characters.
