Captured after a failed escape, Erik's friend Jan refuses to talk, and the Germans take him to the dunes to be shot.
Seat of the Dutch government, The Hague was occupied in May 1940 after Queen Wilhelmina and her ministers fled to London. The German administration ruled from the city, and resistance fighters were executed in the Waalsdorpervlakte dunes nearby. In 1944 and 1945 V-2 rockets were launched at London from its parks, and on 3 March 1945 a mistaken RAF raid killed some 500 residents of Bezuidenhout.
