What happened here
Norsk Hydro's power plant at Vemork, above Rjukan, was the only large-scale producer of heavy water in occupied Europe, a key material for Germany's nuclear research. A British glider assault, Operation Freshman, ended in disaster in November 1942. On the night of 27 to 28 February 1943, Norwegian commandos of Operation Gunnerside climbed the gorge, destroyed the high-concentration cells and escaped without firing a shot.
