When Germany invaded on 9 April 1940, the Oscarsborg fortress sank the heavy cruiser Blücher in the Oslofjord, delaying the occupation long enough for King Haakon VII and the government to escape north. The King refused to accept Vidkun Quisling's regime and later led the resistance from London. In occupied Oslo, saboteurs such as Max Manus and the Oslo Gang mined German ships in the harbour.
