What happened here
In 1940 and 1941 Marseille, in the unoccupied zone, was the last exit from France for refugees, and the American Varian Fry helped some 2,000 artists and intellectuals escape from the Villa Air-Bel. German troops occupied the city in November 1942 and demolished its Old Port quarter in early 1943. French Army B, including Algerian riflemen, liberated Marseille on 28 August 1944.
