What happened here

Before the war, Honolulu and nearby Schofield Barracks and Pearl Harbor made Oahu the largest American military outpost in the Pacific. After the attack of 7 December 1941, the territory lived under martial law until October 1944. The islands became the rear base of the Pacific offensive, where Marine and Army divisions rested and trained between campaigns such as Tarawa and Iwo Jima.
