What happened here

On 7 August 1942 the 1st Marine Division landed on Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands, and seized the unfinished Japanese airfield that became Henderson Field. For six months both sides fed troops and ships into a battle of jungle fighting, disease and night naval clashes. Army divisions took over in late 1942 and cleared the hills inland, and Japan evacuated its last troops in February 1943.
