When the convoy scatters under a wolfpack attack, the Seawitch hides at the edge of the ice and plays cat and mouse with a U-boat.
From August 1941 to May 1945, Allied convoys carried tanks, aircraft and supplies around northern Norway to the Soviet ports of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk. Ships faced pack ice, polar storms, U-boats, Luftwaffe bombers from Norwegian airfields and the threat of the battleship Tirpitz. The worst disaster came in July 1942, when convoy PQ 17 was ordered to scatter and lost 24 of its 35 merchant ships.
