What happened here

Renamed from Saint Petersburg in 1914, the Russian capital was the cradle of the 1917 revolutions. The February Revolution toppled the Tsar, and in May the Provisional Government formed women's 'battalions of death' to shame deserting men back to the front. On 7 November 1917 the Bolsheviks, directed from the Smolny Institute, seized power and took the Winter Palace. The capital moved to Moscow in March 1918.
