Separated from its unit in the retreat, the tank Lulubelle heads south and collects British, South African, Free French and Sudanese soldiers.
This small Libyan port was the key to Axis supply in North Africa. Its garrison, led by the Australian 9th Division, the 'Rats of Tobruk', withstood Rommel's siege from April to November 1941. Tobruk fell on 21 June 1942, with some 33,000 Allied troops captured, a blow that sent Churchill's standing to a low. A British commando and naval raid on the port in September 1942 failed with heavy losses.
