What happened here

The Bolsheviks took Moscow after heavy fighting in November 1917 and made it the Soviet capital in 1918. In the 1930s it was the stage for Stalin's show trials. In October 1941 German armies came within sight of the city, but the Red Army's counteroffensive of 5 December 1941 drove them back, Germany's first major defeat. Troops left for the front from its railway stations throughout the war.
