Survivors and perpetrators speak about the Nazi plan to murder Europe's Jews.
Opened in 1940 for Polish political prisoners near Oświęcim, Auschwitz grew into the largest Nazi killing centre, with gas chambers and crematoria at Birkenau. About 1.1 million people were murdered there, around a million of them Jews; some 420,000 Hungarian Jews arrived in the spring and summer of 1944 alone. On 7 October 1944 the Sonderkommando revolted. Soviet troops liberated the camp on 27 January 1945.
