What really happened
Based on Volker Kutscher's Gereon Rath novels, the series begins in Berlin in 1929, a city of four million with a thriving nightlife, deep poverty and violent street politics. Communists, Nazis and nationalist officers of the secret 'Black Reichswehr' all plotted against the fragile republic, while the Wall Street Crash of October 1929 plunged Germany into mass unemployment.
The series mixes fiction with real events: the 'Blutmai' police crackdown on Communist May Day marchers in 1929, the secret rearmament that Germany carried out in the Soviet Union, the Nazi party's internal struggles and its rise to power in 1933. Its famous Moka Efti nightclub was a real coffee house and dance palace on Friedrichstraße.
