What really happened

The Home Army launched the Warsaw Uprising on 1 August 1944, expecting the Red Army on the far bank of the Vistula to arrive within days. Poorly armed insurgents seized much of the city and freed 348 Jewish prisoners from the Gęsiówka camp on 5 August, but the Soviets halted and the Germans brought in SS and police units to crush the revolt.

In the Wola massacre of 5–12 August, Dirlewanger and Reinefarth's troops murdered some 40,000–50,000 civilians. The Old Town fell on 2 September after its defenders escaped through the sewers, and the uprising capitulated on 2 October. About 16,000 insurgents and up to 200,000 civilians died; Hitler then ordered the city razed.
