  1. Battle

Stop 1: Apartment block near the Volga (after Pavlov's House)

    Key location

Five soldiers turn a ruined apartment block into a fortress and adopt Katya, a girl who refused to leave her home.

What really happened

The story is loosely inspired by Pavlov's House, a four-storey apartment block on 9 January Square that a small garrison of the 13th Guards Rifle Division held for about two months from late September 1942, covering the approaches to the Volga landing. Civilians sheltered in its cellars during the siege.

Russia's first IMAX 3D feature favours spectacle over accuracy: its slow-motion combat, burning soldiers and romantic subplots are invented, and the frame story set in Japan after the 2011 earthquake has no historical basis. The ruined centre and the scale of civilian suffering, however, reflect the real battle, in which tens of thousands of Stalingrad's inhabitants died.
