    Key location

Among gutted buildings and a wrecked railway yard, Vassili and König stalk each other in a game of patience and bait.

What really happened

Vasily Zaitsev was a real sniper of the 284th Rifle Division, credited with 225 kills between October and December 1942 and turned into a hero by Soviet propaganda. The film's opening, with conscripts ferried across the Volga under fire and sent forward with one rifle for every two men, echoes the desperate reinforcement of Chuikov's 62nd Army in September 1942.

The duel with Major König comes from Zaitsev's memoirs and William Craig's book, but historians have found no record of such a German officer and consider the duel largely legend. The love triangle with Tania Chernova is also embellished; the real battle ended with the surrender of the encircled 6th Army on 2 February 1943.
