While her husband and six children march off to cheer Hitler, Antonietta chases an escaped bird into the flat of Gabriele, a radio announcer fired by the regime.

What really happened

Hitler's state visit to Italy in May 1938 was staged by Mussolini as a triumph of the new Rome-Berlin Axis, with parades and military reviews that emptied whole neighbourhoods. That autumn the regime passed its racial laws against Jews, and fascist Italy moved steadily closer to war at Germany's side.

Fascist Italy also persecuted gay men: from 1938 many were sent into internal exile, the confino, some on the island of San Domino in the Tremiti archipelago. Ettore Scola's film, with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor, and won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
