What happened here
Britain's main Atlantic port received most of the convoys that fed the country during the Second World War. From February 1941 the Western Approaches Command directed the anti-submarine war from Derby House in the city centre, and escort groups sailed from its docks. That made Merseyside a Luftwaffe target: the May Blitz of 1941 killed about 1,700 people. Earlier, local volunteers had left from here for Spain.
