What really happened

After Germany's unconditional surrender in May 1945 the country was split into American, British, French and Soviet occupation zones. Transport had collapsed, millions of refugees, freed forced laborers and camp survivors were on the roads, and the Allies arrested Nazi officials and SS members by the tens of thousands.

To confront ordinary Germans with the crimes of the regime, the Allies posted photographs from the liberated camps in towns and villages. The film, adapted from Rachel Seiffert's novel The Dark Room, follows fictional children raised in Nazi ideology as they discover what their parents served.
