Stop 1: British trenches before Saint-Quentin

    Key location

Raleigh settles into C Company's dugout, where Captain Stanhope orders a daylight raid to capture a German prisoner days before the expected attack.

What really happened

The film adapts R. C. Sherriff's 1928 play, written from his own service as an officer with the East Surrey Regiment, who was wounded at Passchendaele in 1917. The story unfolds in a British dugout facing the German line near Saint-Quentin in the days before 21 March 1918.

That morning Germany launched Operation Michael, the opening blow of its spring offensive. After a bombardment of more than a million shells in about five hours, German storm troops overran the British Fifth Army's forward positions in fog; the British suffered around 38,000 casualties on the first day, some 21,000 of them taken prisoner.
