What really happened

The series begins in May 1940, when Hastings and the Sussex coast faced the threat of invasion, and each episode builds its mystery around a real side of the home front: internment of 'enemy aliens', evacuees, rationing and the black market, secret research establishments, the Home Guard and the arrival of American troops before D-Day.

Its later series move to London in 1946 and 1947, where Foyle works for MI5 against the background of the early Cold War, Soviet espionage and Britain's post-war shortages. Creator Anthony Horowitz built many episodes around documented wartime scandals, policies and secret projects.
