What really happened
Operation Market Garden, launched on 17 September 1944, was Field Marshal Montgomery's plan to land three and a half airborne divisions to capture bridges from the Belgian border to Arnhem while XXX Corps drove north along one highway to link them up and outflank the Siegfried Line. It was the largest airborne operation attempted to that point.
The Americans took their bridges at Son and, after a daring river crossing, Nijmegen, but the British 1st Airborne Division landed too far from Arnhem and ran into two SS panzer divisions refitting nearby. Only one battalion reached the bridge; after nine days about 2,400 men were evacuated across the Rhine, and most of the rest were killed or captured. The film follows Cornelius Ryan's 1974 book closely.
